This community idea is in addition to the Safe AI Companion Collective (SAICC). This collective which was setup in 2023 and has as purpose to advice local and global governments about the potential risks. This advice should serve as a basis for regulation.
Triggered by a Belgian suicide case (Incident 505 in the AI Incident Database), the Safe AI Companion Chatbot Collective (SAICC) was founded in 2023 by 4 experts (Nathalie Smuha, Pierre Dewitte, Thomas Ghys and Geertrui Mieke De Ketelaere).
The primary goal of this collective is to proactively support and advice local and global governments, European Institutions and all type of associations with information about the potential risks associated with the use of companion chatbot technology (privacy, addiction, etc).
The collective supports following actions:
Raising awareness: We raise our voice about the risks of shaping intimate relationships through insufficiently tested and controlled AI with individuals, policymakers, regulators, and AI companion providers.
Pushing for safety: We advocate for proper enforcement of privacy, consumer rights, content moderation and intellectual property.
Sharing resources: We want to share the wealth of resources that inform our views to help you navigate the technical, social, legal and ethical aspects of AI companion chatbots.
For more information about the collective and the official complaints, please refer to this site. Understanding and controlling the potential negative and societal impacts by companion chatbots seems to be a very complex topic from a regulatory point of view. Many steps are still to take in order to have a protective regulation in place. Stay tuned for more updates at this level!
